Our story
There used to be a greengrocer on every high street. They went to market at 5am, followed the seasons, knew what was extraordinary that week, and told you what to cook with it. That person disappeared. In their place: the supermarket's eternal summer. Everything available, all the time, from everywhere. None of it tasting of anything.
London Veg Box started in March 2020 as boxes for friends during lockdown — a way to get fresh food to people who needed it when the supermarket shelves were empty. Five years on, we have subscribers who've received over 215 boxes. We're still a small, independent team. We don't have a big marketing budget. What we have is a network of growers we've worked with for years, a deep understanding of what's at its best right now, and a belief that once you show someone what food is supposed to taste like, they don't go back.
We're not trying to replace the supermarket for everything. We're trying to bring back the one thing it killed: the person who knew.
Our promise
These are the promises we make to every subscriber, every box, every week.
We follow peak season, wherever that is. The best forced rhubarb is in Yorkshire in February. The best blood oranges are in Sicily in January. The best asparagus is in Kent in April. Over 75% of our produce comes from farms within 100 miles of London. The rest comes from trusted European growers we've worked with for years. We never fly anything in. We don't follow geography — we follow flavour.
We'd rather send you less than send you something that isn't extraordinary. If it's not at its best this week, it doesn't go in your box. Surplus goes to local food banks — never to landfill.
The people who grow your food are paid properly. We pay above market rates because we want to work with the same farms for years, not chase the cheapest price each week. This isn't charity — it's how you get consistently extraordinary produce.
We work with farmers who care about the soil, not just the yield. Not everything is certified organic, but every grower we work with farms with biodiversity and long-term land health in mind. We visit our farms. We know their practices.
We show our working. Every box arrives with a Masterclass — what you're eating, where it's from, why it's at its peak, and the one thing to cook tonight. We don't send you something extraordinary and leave you to figure it out alone.
We're building something that lasts. We pay the London Living Wage. We support local causes. We reinvest in the growers and the community that make this possible. The supermarket won't miss you. But we'd notice if you were gone.
Our growers
We don't work with anonymous supply chains. We work with people we know, farms we've visited, and growers whose practices we trust. Here are some of them.
Rooftop Farm, Wimbledon. An urban farm growing gourmet mushrooms from recycled coffee grounds, right here in London. They're also home to a wild garden and 50,000 bees. About as local as it gets.
Bedlam Farms Organic, Cambridgeshire. Four generations of family farming in the Fens. They grow our asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli, artichokes, and squashes. We've worked with them since the beginning.
Cafferelli Cucumbers, Cambridgeshire. English cucumbers with a distinct Italian flavour — a specialist grower who proves that familiar produce doesn't have to be boring. No plastic wrapping, either.
The Thorogood Family. Thirty-eight miles away. Their asparagus is extraordinary — a family whose entire reputation rests on getting one vegetable perfect. That's the kind of focus we look for.
Hugh Lowe Farms, Kent. Thirty-two food miles. They supply the Wimbledon Tennis Championships with strawberries. They supply us too. Their berries, raspberries and blackberries are grown in the Garden of England and they taste like it.
The box
The London Veg Box is built around one idea: peak-season produce, personalised to your kitchen, explained so you taste the difference.
Personalised to you. Shape Your Box on the morning of delivery — pick your favourites, exclude what you don't want. A person reads your preferences, not a dropdown menu.
Peak season, not eternal summer. Your box changes every week because the seasons do. Forced rhubarb in February. English asparagus in April. Sicilian blood oranges in January. Whatever's genuinely extraordinary right now.
A Masterclass every week. What you're eating, why it's at its best, and the one thing to cook tonight. Plus Artichoke Intelligence — our AI recipe engine that knows your box, your fridge, and your tastes.
Delivered every Tuesday. By our own team, not a courier. Returnable and compostable packaging. Your box was probably in the ground yesterday.
No commitment. Skip, pause, or cancel anytime. Free delivery, always.
By choosing London Veg Box, you're getting a greengrocer who knows your name.
